Agent Skills Marketplace

01 THE IDEA

With OpenAI quietly launching support for agent skills in Codex (following Anthropic's Claude), there is now an open standard (agentskills.io) for packaging reusable instructions, scripts, and resources that AI agents can call on demand. This creates a natural opportunity for a marketplace where developers and power users can publish, discover, and monetize skill bundles — similar to how npm works for code packages but for AI agent capabilities.

The business model could include a free tier for community-contributed skills, a paid tier for premium or enterprise-grade skills, and a revenue share with skill creators. Early focus areas like legal review workflows, data pipeline skills, CI/CD automation helpers, and Notion-to-implementation converters are already referenced in OpenAI's own announcement, signaling clear demand from technical teams.

The timing is excellent given OpenAI's launch, but the risk is that OpenAI or Anthropic build this natively into their own ecosystems and commoditize any third-party marketplace. The window to establish a community moat is real but narrow. Worth a lean, fast experiment with a GitHub-first community approach before building heavy infrastructure.
