Airport Luggage Cart Rental Business

Operate the coin/card-operated luggage cart rental concession at airports — a near-monopoly, captive-audience cash flow machine with almost no ongoing costs.

01 THE IDEA

The luggage cart rental business operates on a concession model: you negotiate a revenue-sharing deal with an airport to be the exclusive provider of rental luggage carts. Travelers pay $6 per cart (no real alternative), and when done, return the cart for a small incentive (e.g., a quarter) or simply leave it for occasional staff collection. The equipment (the carts themselves) is durable and low-maintenance. There are no real substitutes, pricing power is unconstrained, and the labor cost to collect and redistribute carts is minimal.

This is a 'buy it once, rent it forever' business with a natural monopoly at each airport location, captive demand (travelers with heavy bags have essentially no substitute), and recurring revenue that scales directly with passenger volume. The key challenge is winning the airport concession contract, which is a competitive bid process. Once won, however, the business is extraordinarily cash-generative with minimal reinvestment required.

03 THE VERDICT

The unit economics are exceptional but the market is effectively locked up by Smarte Carte at most major airports. A new entrant would need to win competitive bids at smaller regional airports or internationally, which requires significant relationship capital and industry experience. Better to admire this as a model than attempt to replicate it directly.
