THE STORY
Statemently turns bank-statement PDFs into clean Excel, CSV, QuickBooks (QBO), OFX and QIF files — for bookkeepers, accountants and small-business owners who'd otherwise retype transactions by hand. The bet was accuracy: instead of raw OCR, it extracts with Claude Opus and then reconciles every statement (opening balance + transactions = closing), so the numbers are verified, not guessed. Built solo — converter first, then accounts (magic-link + Google), a credit/subscription paywall. Most of the work wasn't the AI — it was the boring-but-critical parts: the money path, the funnel & security.
LESSONS LEARNED
Ship the converter before the paywall — proving the output is trustworthy is the product; billing is the easy part. Reconciling the totals did more for trust (and conversion) than any landing-page copy. And gate data on the server, never the client: the only safe "free sample" is one where unpaid users never receive the full result in the first place — truncating it in the browser is a paywall you can curl past.
