City-Specific Cheap Flights Newsletter
A network of hyper-local email newsletters aggregating Google Flights price alerts for specific departure cities, monetized by subscription and affiliate commissions from booking platforms.

Scott's Cheap Flights (now Going.com) proved the model but has lost its soul through rebrand and corporatization. The opportunity is to resurrect city-specific flight deal newsletters using Google Flights' native alert system as a free data source. Build newsletters for each major US metro (e.g., 'Cheap Flights from Denver') by setting up Google Flights alerts for all routes from that city, aggregating the deals into a weekly or real-time email, and distributing via beehiiv.
Growth uses Facebook ads targeting 'frequent traveler' interest segments with cheap CPM, and the email list naturally grows virally as subscribers forward deals to travel companions. Monetization stacks: paid subscription tier, Kiwi/Skyscanner affiliate commissions per booking, and high-CPM travel advertising inventory. The playbook scales by replicating the newsletter for every major metro in the US, Canada, and globally — potentially 50-100 newsletters from one system. The Canadian market (YUL Deals, YYZ Deals model) shows this works even with a terrible 1990s website.

03 THE VERDICT
Validated business model with a clear incumbent whose rebrand created an opening, highly automatable operations, multiple monetization streams, and a natural viral growth mechanism (forwarding deals). The city-specific angle creates a network of assets that compound in value. Starting with one city and proving the model before scaling is low-risk. This is a great lifestyle business with real upside if the network effect across cities works.
