VERDICT: MAYBEBERG SCORE 52/100

Dunbar – Micro Social Network for Close Friends

A private, minimalist social network capped at ~150 connections that lets close friends share location overlap, photos, and status updates — a modern rebuild of Path.

01 THE IDEA

Inspired by Path and Dunbar's Number (the sociological theory that humans can maintain ~150 meaningful relationships), this idea is a stripped-back private social network designed specifically for close friends and family. The core use case is frictionless location sharing — knowing when you and a close friend are in the same city so you can spontaneously connect — surfaced through a clean, proximity-sorted feed. Unlike Find My Friends (flat and utilitarian) or Instagram (public, performative), this app is intimate and purposeful.

The business model could be a simple annual subscription ($20-$30/year) rather than ads, which aligns with the privacy-first positioning. PR strategy writes itself: every legacy media outlet wants to publish a 'this app is trying to kill toxic social media' story. The main challenge is the classic cold-start problem — a social network with no friends on it is useless — but targeted launch communities (e.g. college campuses, expat groups, remote friend circles) could seed network effects. AI reduces the cost of building a polished MVP to near zero compared to when Path launched.

03 THE VERDICT

The demand is real — Zenly's shutdown left a gap, and Instagram status updates being used mostly for city check-ins validates the location-sharing use case. However, consumer social is brutally hard to bootstrap due to network effects, and many well-funded attempts have failed here. Best path is a hyper-focused initial community (e.g. expats, digital nomads) and a subscription model from day one. High risk, high reward.
