With SpaceX's Starship making lunar missions economically feasible and the Artemis program returning humans to the Moon, there is an emerging opportunity to build the 'picks and shovels' business of the lunar economy. Rather than trying to compete with SpaceX on rockets, this idea focuses on what needs to exist on the Moon once humans arrive: stored resources (water, oxygen, food), power generation (nuclear or solar), and logistics coordination. The model is analogous to how Vaarda does pharmaceutical manufacturing in low-earth orbit or Planet Labs sells Earth imagery data—companies that couldn't exist without SpaceX's cost reduction but don't compete with SpaceX directly.
The business would master the unit economics of getting a kilogram of useful payload to the lunar surface and relentlessly optimize around whichever resource has the best return. Early revenue could come from NASA CLPS-style contracts, with longer-term revenue from selling resources to private lunar operators. The catalyst moment will be live-streamed humans on the Moon—expected within a few years—which will unlock massive public and investor attention to the lunar economy.
