VERDICT: MAYBEBERG SCORE 52/100

Permissionless Spec Work Agency

A creative agency that proactively mocks up unsolicited work for target clients to attract inbound business rather than pitching cold.

01 THE IDEA

The idea is to build a design or creative agency that inverts the traditional pitch model: instead of waiting for client briefs, the agency produces high-quality speculative work (e.g., reimagined UX, brand identities, campaign concepts) for specific dream clients or industries, publishes it publicly, and lets the quality of the work attract inbound inquiries. This 'magnet' approach means the agency's portfolio doubles as marketing.

The model was described by Jack Butcher referencing an agency he admired that would mock up 'the future of air travel' in 2012, publish polished UI concepts, and then have Virgin Atlantic and Delta come to them wanting to put their logo on it. For a solo founder or small team, this approach dramatically lowers client acquisition costs and positions the agency as a thought leader rather than a vendor, commanding higher fees and better project selection.

03 THE VERDICT

The model is proven and elegant, but it's fundamentally a services business with a clever acquisition strategy — not a scalable product. ARR ceiling is real. Best suited for a skilled designer who wants premium clients without cold pitching, but growth requires hiring and the agency trap returns quickly. AI is also eroding the moat for commodity creative work, so the window to differentiate on concept quality is narrowing.
