VERDICT: SKIPBERG SCORE 42/100

Personalized S&P 500 Unbundler (Direct Indexing for Everyone)

A consumer investing app that lets anyone build a custom version of the S&P 500 (or any index) by selecting which companies to include or exclude, at fractional share prices accessible to retail investors.

01 THE IDEA

Howard Lindzon's core insight is that Vanguard had the technology to let people buy fractional shares and build personalized index portfolios years ago but kept it closed — forcing everyone to own the full S&P 500 including companies they hate (Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, etc.). The entire Web3/crypto/NFT explosion is, at its core, the unbundling of the S&P 500: people want to own portfolios that reflect their values, beliefs, and views without being forced into a bundled product.

The business is a direct indexing platform democratized for retail investors: pick the S&P 500, remove the 5 companies you hate, overweight the sectors you believe in, and own the underlying fractional shares directly (with the tax-loss harvesting benefits that come with it). This already exists for ultra-high-net-worth investors (Parametric, Aperio, Canvas) but has not been made truly consumer-friendly and accessible at $1,000 or less entry points. Robinhood, Fidelity, and others are moving here but the UX is still clunky.

03 THE VERDICT

The concept is validated and the demand trend is undeniable, but the market is rapidly being entered by well-capitalized incumbents (Fidelity, Schwab, Betterment, Wealthfront). M1 Finance has already gotten close to the consumer-friendly version. A startup in this space needs a genuinely differentiated angle — values-based filtering with a strong community/social layer, or a specific persona (e.g., ESG-focused millennials, crypto-native investors wanting TradFi exposure) — to avoid being crushed by the incumbents. The window is narrowing.
