SteamSketch – Ephemeral Shower Door Drawing App

An iPad app that simulates a steamy shower door you draw on with your finger, with realistic fog physics and shower sounds, where drawings automatically disappear after a short time.

01 THE IDEA

SteamSketch recreates the tactile, meditative experience of drawing on a fogged shower door. The app launches clear, steams up within seconds, and lets users draw by removing the simulated condensation with their fingertip — pressure sensitivity determines line thickness, just like a real finger on real steam. Ambient shower sounds play through headphones. After roughly 45 seconds, the steam creeps back and erases the drawing. If you want to keep something, screenshot it yourself — there's no save function, no layers, no tools. It's intentionally ephemeral.

This is a passion/personal project framed as a consumer app rather than a venture-scale business. Monetization could be a one-time premium price ($3–$5) on the App Store. The core technical challenge is achieving uncanny-valley-free steam simulation — pressure-sensitive finger tracking, realistic condensation physics, and drip behavior. Jason Fried explicitly noted he started building this and stalled on the rendering fidelity, making it a well-scoped engineering challenge for the right graphics/iOS developer.

03 THE VERDICT

The concept is charming and genuinely differentiated in a crowded sketching app market, but the addressable audience is small and monetization is limited to a one-time App Store purchase. The hard part — realistic steam physics — is a genuine technical moat that keeps copycats at bay, but it also means execution risk is high. Best pursued as a passion project or portfolio piece by a skilled graphics developer; unlikely to generate meaningful revenue but could attract significant press and cult following.
