X Games DAO Acquisition

Form a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) to collectively purchase the X Games IP from ESPN/Disney for ~$50M and reimagine it as a web3-native extreme sports property.

01 THE IDEA

The core idea is to buy the X Games brand, IP, and event infrastructure from ESPN/Disney (asking ~$50M) via a DAO fundraise — similar to ConstitutionDAO raising ~$47M to buy a physical document. The DAO would give token holders governance rights over the property, including decisions about event formats, athlete selection, and media strategy. The pitch is that the X Games has a passionate, fervent community in extreme sports that has been neglected by Disney/ESPN, and web3 tooling can unlock community ownership and participation in a way traditional corporate ownership cannot.

The reimagined X Games would shift from two annual events to a year-round touring series (like musicians on tour), create athlete-specific NFTs that give fans access to AMAs, ticketed events, and voting rights, produce a Drive to Survive-style docuseries to reinstall personalities into the culture, and sell broadcast rights to streaming platforms. Revenue streams would include NFT drops, event ticket sales, broadcast licensing, video game licensing (e.g., a Tony Hawk Pro Skater-style X Games game), merchandise, and sponsorships.

03 THE VERDICT

The strategic logic is genuinely compelling — a languishing but beloved brand with a fervent community, available at a distressed price, with web3 tools that could unlock fan ownership and athlete monetization in novel ways. However, $50M is a massive capital hurdle, the DAO governance model at this scale is unproven and legally complex, and athlete IP rights are a known minefield. The idea works best as a thesis for a specialized sports/media PE firm that also embraces web3 tooling, rather than a pure DAO play. Execution risk is extremely high.
