01 THE IDEA
Harley describes how, stuck in Ottawa — a government town with no organic startup culture — he and peers deliberately built their own founder community called Fresh Founders, which met every Friday and eventually produced companies like Shopify, Fellow, and others. The business idea is to productize this model: create a curriculum, facilitation guides, matching algorithms, and community infrastructure that helps founders in 'non-entrepreneurial' cities bootstrap their own peer mastermind groups.
This could be a SaaS platform with community features, a paid membership program, or a franchise-style cohort model where local organizers license the playbook. The market is anyone in a tier-2 or tier-3 city who wants the benefits of being in Austin or San Francisco but can't or won't relocate. Revenue could come from membership fees, organizer licensing, corporate sponsorships, or hybrid event/digital models.

There's a real market here but the graveyard of failed founder communities (On Deck, etc.) shows execution is extremely hard. The playbook approach — licensing structure and tooling rather than running communities directly — is the smartest angle for capital efficiency. Success depends on finding passionate local organizers and solving the cold-start problem in each new city, which is slow and labor-intensive.
