01 THE IDEA

Taking inspiration from specialty print magazines and the 'waste of time' video game magazine referenced in the podcast, this idea is to create premium, oversized coffee table books dedicated to single gaming franchises or console eras that defined the Millennial experience. Each book would feature original artwork, developer interviews, behind-the-scenes photography, and retrospective essays — essentially a luxury artifact for people who grew up with these games but currently have no high-end physical object to commemorate that era.

The go-to-market approach is content-first: build a YouTube channel documenting what made a specific game (e.g., Metal Gear Solid 2) culturally significant, grow an audience of engaged superfans, then launch the book as a Kickstarter or direct pre-order to that audience. Crowdfunding de-risks inventory entirely. Sequels (one book per franchise per year) create a recurring revenue model. The key differentiator from existing gaming books is the Millennial-specific era focus and premium production quality — targeting buyers who will spend $80-150 on a beautiful object, not a $15 paperback.

03 THE VERDICT

Bitmap Books and Read-Only Memory have already proven the premium gaming book market, but the Millennial-era niche is genuinely underserved. The crowdfunding model de-risks inventory completely. The main challenges are long production cycles (12-18 months per book), IP/licensing complexity, and the one-time nature of each purchase (low LTV per customer unless you build a series). Strong as a passion project that could become a real business, but unlikely to scale beyond $500K ARR without significant catalog depth.
