Plaid for Agents (Vertical Identity & Payment Layer)
A trusted middleware layer that authenticates AI agents and authorizes transactions within a specific industry vertical, solving the identity and liability gap that causes businesses to block agents.
01 THE IDEA
The single biggest reason businesses block AI agents is that they cannot verify whether a human actually authorized the purchase and cannot assign liability when something goes wrong. Just as Plaid built a trusted data-sharing bridge between fintech apps and banks, this business builds the trusted identity and payment authorization layer between AI agents and businesses in one specific vertical — say, restaurant supply ordering, contractor booking, or veterinary appointment scheduling.
The model is B2B2C: charge the businesses (restaurants, contractors, vet clinics) a SaaS subscription or per-transaction fee to accept verified agent requests, and optionally charge agent platforms for certified access. The vertical focus is critical — general layers will be won by Visa, Mastercard, and Cloudflare, but every industry has its own ERP integrations, compliance quirks, and existing software vendors that a specialized player can exploit. First-mover in a vertical locks in network effects as both businesses and agent platforms standardize on the connector.

03 THE VERDICT
This is the highest-ceiling idea in the video — Plaid was valued at $13B at peak and solved a structurally identical problem. The vertical-niche framing is the right wedge to avoid competing with Visa/Mastercard directly. The main challenge is that this requires real engineering depth and navigating payment compliance, raising the bar vs. the audit business. Founders with fintech or payments backgrounds who also have vertical domain expertise should move immediately — the window is 18-24 months before incumbents commoditize the general layer and crowd out niche players.
