Science-to-Business Foundry (Production Board Model)
A holding company that scouts emerging scientific discoveries, identifies non-obvious commercial applications, recruits domain experts, and incubates deep-tech startups from scratch.
▶ WATCH THE SOURCE SEGMENT — Anything Is Possible with Dave Friedberg | Where It Happens01 THE IDEA
Dave Friedberg describes the Production Board as a foundry/holding company model: instead of being a VC fund, they hold equity on their balance sheet, fund internal R&D experiments, and spin out companies when concepts prove viable. The key differentiator is a systematic process of reading primary scientific literature, mapping emerging discoveries to market gaps, and identifying the non-linear application — the insight that inventors themselves often miss because they're too close to the science.
For a founder or operator wanting to build this, the model is: (1) develop deep scientific reading habits across 2-3 domains, (2) build a network of academic scientists willing to consult or join, (3) raise an evergreen fund or personal capital pool, (4) run cheap R&D experiments in-house before spinning out companies with outside capital. The moat is pattern recognition across science + markets + people — something that compounds over time. This is essentially what Flagship Pioneering (Moderna's parent) does in biotech, applied to broader climate/food/energy tech.

03 THE VERDICT
This is a genuinely powerful model with massive upside (see Flagship/Moderna) but requires serious capital, scientific expertise, and a long time horizon before any returns materialize. It's not a business for a solo founder without $10M+ and a scientific background. The closest accessible version for someone earlier in their journey is a much smaller 'science scouting' newsletter or advisory service that helps corporates or VCs identify emerging science applications — which is a lower-capital entry point into the same insight-generation loop.
